The Whickers were established in 2015 to fund and recognise original and innovative documentary. We seek to use the generous legacy of our namesake, pioneering broadcaster Alan Whicker, to support emerging film and audio documentary-makers in the funding and production of director led programmes. The Whickers are comprised of two annual awards: the Film & TV Funding Award and the Radio and Audio Funding Award.The Film & TV Funding Award is awarded annually to an emerging filmmaker from anywhere in the world with the most promising pitch for a director-led documentary which fulfils the core criteria detailed below. With a main award worth £80,000 and a runner-up contribution of £15,000, The Whickers Film & TV Funding Award is one of the most significant documentary awards in the world. Applications for 2021 are now closed. The 2022 round will open in early October 2021.The Radio and Audio Funding Award (RAFA) is awarded annually to an emerging audio producer based anywhere in the world to create an original radio or audio documentary of between 28-45 minutes. A main award of £6,000 including mentorship from a top industry professional will be awarded to an audio documentary-maker to produce a feature-length programme. New to 2020, we introduced The Whickers Audio Inspiration Lab (The Mighty WAIL), a series of development workshops for our finalists, all of whom received £1,000 worth of funding towards the development their audio projects.
