Theories Playscapes Ltd design and build whole play spaces for all ages and abilities integrating landscaping and play features to create an environment that can be played in, explored, and re-invented each day. Play is a much more complex and interesting activity than it is traditionally catered for by catalogue equipment manufacturers. High active play structures answer only one small part of the jigsaw that we call play. Play can also be about socialising, quiet play, contemplation of a scudding cloud or flying insect. A good play space should cater for a wide spectrum of play activities. We have been professionally observing play activities for many years (26!) in all sorts of context and learnt that children spend more time in the spaces between and around play structures than they spend on the structures themselves. These spaces are very often flat open tarmac or rubber spaces with nothing in them. Whilst generic play items will always remain a central mechanism supporting play, we direct our design invention to the whole play environment and focus on creating a flexible, exciting and beautiful space in which children can explore and invent their own play activities together or alone. The play environments Theories design and build integrate hard landscaping, soft landscaping, decorative treatments as well as play features with a twist.
