Arts & Crafts - Edgecliff, New South Wales, Australia
Thienny Lee Gallery was founded by the director, Thienny Lee, in 2016. Thienny is a historian of Asian Art and Textiles, has taught Asian History at the University of Sydney and the history of Contemporary Southeast Asian Art at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, UK. Thienny Lee Gallery was established for the passion and expertise on Southeast Asian art that Thienny embraces. Southeast Asia is in Australia's neighbourhood, its arts should be as familiar to us as European or American art – but it is not, it feels foreign. Thienny Lee Gallery seeks to make connections with Southeast Asia through their art. Some of the arts that showcase in this gallery drawing on cultural heritage of Southeast Asia such as traditional technique batik, wayang kulit or shadow puppets, lacquer, even religious mural paintings.Nevertheless, the gallery's vision is not limited to this region nor to their traditional use of media, it is also dedicated in showcasing the talents of both established and emerging Sydney artists – a combination that will create an exciting and diverse annual exhibition program. The Gallery is excited about the coming years ahead to introduce Sydney gallery goers to a new group of artists by bringing a diverse range of artists to Australian audiences.
