thinkSRSD is an educational consulting group that focuses on evidence-based writing instruction, particularly Self-regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) to support writing development. SRSD is an approach to teaching the writing process that integrates all the strongest features of authentic writing process instruction. Developed by Dr. Karen Harris and colleagues, and supported by over 100 empirical research studies, Self-regulated Strategy Development is based on decades of empirical research that show how powerfully it actually raises the quality of student writing, as well as enjoyment of writing. SRSD Course Description: Learn evidence-based practices that enable all your students to flourish as writers in a writing process community instructional framework. Learn how to prepare your students to achieve CCSS's vision for all genres (narrative, informative and opinion), to enjoy the journey in doing so, and to use writing as a powerful tool for learning as well. The evidence-based approach to writing instruction featured in this course is the Self-regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) model that teaches: genre vocabulary, efficient formative assessment practices, optimal graphic organizers, how to effectively analyze models, focused think alouds, collaborative writing, mnemonics, goal setting strategies, and how to use self-talk while writing to cultivate the self-regulation qualities expert writers possess. These practices can be taught in tandem with any writing approach, or as stand-alone units. Writing components of new generation assessments (PARCC / SBAC) will be overviewed, with a view towards capitalizing on their promise to enhance teaching and learning overall. Audience is grades K-12
