Thurso Community Development Trust has the core aim of making Thurso a better place to live, work and visit through community led sustainable development. A member of Development Trust Association Scotland the function of a development trust is to take an enterprising approach to community development to reduce dependency on grant funding and improve our local area socially, environmentally and culturally through a place making approach while matching projects to identified community need. We have the following projects either already commenced or currently in development: Discover Thurso - improving tourism through a destination marketing project and developing tourism infastructure, facilities and activities in Thurso. Thurso Grows - funded by the Scottish Government Climate Challenge Fund to encourage local food growing and food waste minimisation. Thurso Community Magazine - A quarterly magazine aimed at increasing community spirit in Thurso and increasing awareness of community projects, events, activities and facilities. Thurso Harbour Public Toilets - We took these on lease in 2019 and are currently improving the facility to open in March 2020. Thurso Community Hub - we are working on securing funding to assess the feasibility of the Drill Hall, Sinclair Street, Thurso as a Community Hub, a core need to reduce social isolation and increase general wellbeing and community spirit in Thurso. In addition to this, we are currently partnership working with Caithness Chamber of Commerce on a Zero Waste Scotland project and have various climate action projects in development particularly surrounding active travel within the town. We will also in 2020 hope to secure funding to work on activities which reduce social isolation and address issues of food insecurity in Thurso.
