BackgroundMost learners from public schools in South Africa do not make it to university level. Although university education is not necessarily a prerequisite for success in life, it does provide a significant stepping stone to economic and mental freedom, especially outside the influence of privilege. Despite some of the funding and resource provisions already available in the form of bursaries and grants, the number of township students able to attain a tertiary education or embark on viable alternatives are consistently low due to inequalities in education standards, access and a lack of information. Thutopele directly translates to "education first". This education does not only include university studies, but any form of knowledge or skill that will help one better themselves and those around them, despite their origins. The initiative embraces the never-ending cycle of education and aims to use it as a way of empowering our communities by creating a means for their inhabitants to follow their dreams, or direct them to where they can.Who we are:Thutopele initiative is a non-profit company (NPC) registered through the CIPC; we are a level 1 B-BBEE contributor.
