Nurturing creativity, cultivating curiosity and championing excellence in education for children from pre-Kindergarten through graduation in Torrance Unified School District, Torrance Education Foundation engages and unifies its community around the priorities that serve our kids. TEF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity founded in 1992 to raise funds and convene business, residents and public interests around the most pressing needs challenging students and teachers. TEF supports high-priority projects for TUSD, offers grants to teachers through its STEM Initiative for extra-curricular projects and competitions focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; partners annually with the 31 district elementary (17), middle (8), high (5) schools, along with LAUNCH Special Needs Pre-school, in participatory community fundraising projects. TEF provides supplemental funding for the district's four Academic Decathlon Teams, and in 2017 awarded more than 69,000 in scholarships to graduating TUSD seniors in collaboration with local underwriters. Since 2009, TEF has administered the South Bay Enrichment Academy which provides fully WASC-accredited summer school to Torrance and other South Bay students who enroll both for enrichment (elementary and middle school), and for grade advancement or recovery (high school). Currently, the Foundation is also focusing its energy on raising the $750,000 needed to fully equip new, leading-edge science laboratory classrooms being constructed at all 17 elementary schools. Physical construction of the classrooms - fully supported by the Torrance community with a 2014 capital bond, but excluding funds for classroom equipment which TEF will raise - places Torrance Unified among the vanguard of California districts implementing the newest pedagogy techniques to deliver Next Generation Science Standards to Torrance youngsters. TEF is proud to be a part of creating the ideal learning environment for young minds to experience science in a hands-on, experimentation-focused setting. Funds donated which target the Science Labs will allow all 17 labs to be fully outfitted for optimal science learning.
