Legal/Attorney - N/A, N/A, UK
We've supported our local community since 1975.We help people fleeing persecution overseas to be granted asylum in this country. We help to reunite families separated by international borders. We help women escape violence at home and we help people for whom we are the last resort fight deportation. We fight to prevent people from being unfairly evicted. We help people living in unsafe and unhealthy homes to make their landlords repair them. We help homeless people win a home.We help make sure people get the welfare benefits they are entitled to. They include some of the most vulnerable members of society who are fearful and desperate in the face of decisions to withdraw Personal Independence Payments and Education & Support Allowance. We believe in social justice. Nobody should be excluded from legal representation just because they are poor, vulnerable or lack education. We enable people to understand and assert their rights as members of society. We believe this is fundamental to the framework of a properly functioning democracy.Recent cuts to Legal Aid have severely dented but not destroyed the service we provide. There used to be 30 of us. Now, with just five full-time staff and ten part-timers, we still help almost 1,500 people a year. We would like to help more. We're proud of our long-standing relationships with high-profile City law firms. Over almost four decades, we've helped hundreds of trainee solicitors gain valuable experience and grow as individuals. We're proud of our alumni and grateful to them. We're always looking for new opportunities to work with others in our community – with local businesses, charitable trusts, educational establishments and private citizens. You don't have to be a lawyer to help us.
