Architecture & Planning - Rome, Lazio, Italy
A professional design and research studio dedicated to sustainable urban projects. I share with Paolo Soleri my conviction that cities are one of the nicest things humans ever invented and we need to get back to making them great after some dangerous deviations that have led to dysfunctional sprawl cities. I share with the Senseable Cities Lab and others an interest in innovative technologies (and my latest course has focused on Smart City initiatives) but to quote Richard Rodgers "I am wild about technology but not about technology gone wild." I am on Team Human. I share with New Urbanists many ideals such as human scale, walkability, and local knowledge (though I don't share their fixation with the formal language of classicism.) I am an avid reader of Buckminster Fuller, Lewis Mumford, Jane Jacobs, Holly Whyte, Illich, Ivan, Kenneth Frampton, Naomi Klein, William McDonough, Bill McKibben, Paul Hawken, and others. However I am also passionate about the culture of urban artifacts. I believe in the power of art, music, and film to activate urban life, and with Aldo Rossi I shared a strong belief in the importance of architecture as an autonomous discipline with huge potential but only when decoupled from functionalist and capitalist dogmas. In short, I have faith in cities as places where humans can live well, collaborating on creative ventures, in harmony with equally essential rural realities, that begin to reverse our species negative impact on the planet. Our studio projects aim not to reduce negative impact but to produce net positive impact; carbon neutral (net zero) is only the starting point.
