Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, Ranchi was founded by the Philanthropist, Industrialist Mr. B.M. Birla in the year 1955, as part of his lifelong commitment towards building a technologically advanced and industrially strong India. The achievements of the Institute, both in terms of research and excellent standard of academic programmes led to its attaining the status of a Deemed University under the UGC Act of the Government of India, in 1986. BIT offers undergraduate, postgraduate as well as doctoral level programmes in all major branches of Engineering and Technology, Architecture, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, Business Management & Hotel Management & Catering Technology. It is a full member of Indian Universities and its academic standards are respected and recognised globally. The Institute continues to add and upgrade the infrastructure and maintain high academic standards through excellence in teaching as well as curriculum development to address the changing needs of the Industry. The Institute has laterally expanded through establishment of several extension centres in India. The main campus of the Institute is located in a picturesque 780 acres setting at the confluence of the rivers Jumar and Subernrekha, 16 kilometers from Ranchi city. It is entirely residential, providing accommodation to all the students. The Institute buildings includes Research Laboratories, Lecture Halls, Central Library, Workshops etc. cover an area exceeding 5,00,000 Sq. ft. The well laid out Campus of the Institute provides facilities for cultural, recreational and sports activities.
