TRAVELERS AID OF PITTSBURGH is a non-profit, United Way agency which provides social service programs to individuals in need of transit assistance. The only organization of its kind in Western Pennsylvania, Travelers Aid works with public and private entities to offer a variety of transportation options for various populations. For decades, the agency utilized United Way funding and focused on being a resource for stranded travelers in crises to return home or to safe haven through a partnership with Greyhound buslines. In 1998, Travelers Aid developed the first of their local programs, Mobile Moms. A grant opportunity provided the base funding for Travelers Aid to work with a network of medical facilities, utilizing a unique model in providing public transit assistance to pregnant women to access medical care to their prenatal checkups. This cost-effective approach proved to be successful, and attendance rates improved for prenatal appointments in facilities in the network.Mobile Moms opened the door for the agency to become a formative partner in providing assistance to a variety of populations in Allegheny County throughout the last twenty years.Travelers Aid has since developed partnerships with the Department of Human Services in Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Medical Assistance Transportation, the Office of Children, Youth and Families, the Office of Behavioral Health, Labor & Industry, the Department of Corrections, as well as a plethora of foundations, human service and medical providers.Travelers Aid continues to provide the traditional assistance to stranded travelers through Greyhound buslines, but has expanded the palette to offer Port Authority transit tickets, weekly and monthly bus passes, Giant Eagle GetGo and Sunoco gasoline debit cards, and Lyft, UBER and Ztrip vouchers and rides to local residents.
