The company was started as an MBA project at the University of Chicago. It was one of the winners of the Global New Venture Challenge of the Polsky Centre for Entrepreneurship of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, which is ranked as one of the top business accelerators in the world. Tustawi has received seed funding from the University of Chicago and funding from FSD Kenya to develop online training for the financial sector in Kenya.
