Non-Profit - New York, NY, US
We are an FJC sponsored, 501c3, providing free, one-on-one after school tutoring, mentoring ad academic support for NYC children, ages 8-18, who are failing or doing poorly in school. Volunteer tutors/mentors are recruited from the surrounding corporate community in lower Manhattan. The majority are young professionals working in banks and financial institutions in the Wall Street area. Their backgrounds reflect the ethnic diversity of the city and that of the children with whom they work.Tutoring takes place for 90 minutes a week - either on Mondays or Wednesdays. Once a student is matched with a tutor, each pair meets their selected evening throughout the school year. An Individual Education Plan is created for each student that addresses his/her particular needs. Skill-building packets in reading comprehension, math, and word work are aligned to the curriculum of the NYC Department of Education. Our staff works closely with parents toward on their child's educational goals. Additionally, a Math Lab takes place Mondays 4:30pm-8pm to provide individualized, focus assistance to 8th-12th graders in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Two by Two provides SAT/ACT prep as well as prep for the NYS exams. If you are interested in either being tutored or volunteering as a tutor, contact blichtman@twobytwotutoring.org for more information.
