Tzu Kingdom is a beautiful place - it's supportive and accepting and exists for good and good alone. The enemy is bad people who mistreat dogs (especially puppy farmers) and their mission is to find new friends to share the Kingdom and to rescue Tzus-Less-Fortunate. Tzus are brave as lions and mount the most amazing rescues through various teams of rescuers, scouts and communications back up and there's a huge back story that spreads the message about puppy farms and, in the end, leads to the death of a young mother tzu, dealt with bravely, respectfully and appropriately. So, amongst some incredible laughs and adventures that include Queen Coffee hosting a "pamper night" that is actually more of a cover to get an evening with her girlfriends to discuss important matters (they get rid of the boys by talking of furcurlers and pawdicures), an adventure for main character Stanley and his friend Paddy to reunite a lost tzu with her family and meeting a young girl who can understand them when they are enchanted and the journey of rescued tzu Maisie being poorly on rescue and then getting better and flourishing into an inspirational young tzu, there are themes about dealing with new situations, making new friends, growing in confidence, getting better, dealing with death, respecting your elders, being responsible and having fun. Boys and girls are equally as empowered, borne out by the equal ruling of the King and Queen. It's also made clear that not everyone needs to be a heroic "rescuer" to succeed and some, even Stanley in the end, decide on quieter occupations. In Book One, we cross at times to Stanley's home life, in fact it is where the story starts, in Edinburgh in the shadow of the castle. The double life is good for kids to know that they are slightly different at home to how they might be at school and we see him, and others, flourish in the Tzu World whilst always remaining his Mama and Daddy's cute baby dog. We meet Tzus from all over the world - as far away as New Zealand and New York. In Book Two, we will be visiting Maisie's new home in Wales more and in Book Three, Lake Ontario where Coffee and Bailey's romance blossoms.Tzu Kingdom is also very accepting - Colin Tzu lives with two dads (Dads and Popsy) and this is a future story as they are in show business. Colin is disabled too and everyfur has their foibles! Other stories in the future including the elopement of Coffee and Bailey to Paris and there's a mystery to be solved about the disappearance of the Swiss wartime King, Wolfgang, in Book Two that reveals a secret that has been passed down for generations. We see the final book saying goodbye to King Bailey and the baton being passed to Stanley via an election that sees him going up against Paddy, but Paddy actually casting the final vote for Stan to be King, with Maisie as his Queen. There are hints of this already but many adventures to be had before this happy/sad day occurs. There are many tzu friends to be had, adventures to go on and sausages to be eaten at parties first. Nothing in the book preaches at children, it just gently talks about life and being the best you can be. It contains a lot of positive messages and some gentle comedy. You'll laugh and cry in equal measure!
