Ubumwe Sports Initiative ("Ubumwe") uses sport as a means to enhance unity among Rwandan youth while simultaneously supporting Rwandan basketball development. Since 2010, Ubumwe has trained over 1500 youth between the ages of 7-18 years old and equipped over 200 coaches with the skills necessary to implement basketball programming in their own communities and serve as mentors to local youth players. Ubumwe is a local initiative based in Kigali with programming in Kigali, Huye, & Rubavu. Our team is made up of ten volunteers. Ubumwe's primary programming takes place during August & December during school holiday. Ubumwe offers both students and reformed street children the opportunity to attend a two to four week camp that focuses on teaching the basic fundamentals of basketball as well as character building principles. Principles include: unity, teamwork, communication, trust building, sportsmanship (fair play), respect, focus, self-empowerment, self-esteem, & responsibility. Additionally, Ubumwe has a Women's Team, UbumweBBC, that participates in the FERWABA National League and most recently represented Rwanda in the Zone 5 Africa Cup.
