In 1996, the AIDS Research Institute (ARI) was established by the Regents of the University of California to coordinate HIV/AIDS research and clinical activities at UC San Diego. In 2017 the ARI evolved into The HIV Institute to acknowledge our investigators' and clinicians' focus on preventing, treating and curing HIV before it progresses to AIDS. Today's epidemic is much different from 36 years ago. This new name reflects the progress we've made over the epidemic and reinforces that it's now possible for individuals to live long and healthy lives with HIV.For over 20 years, the Institute has served as an umbrella organization to many diverse HIV-related activities across UC San Diego. By coordinating and promoting scientific research and exchange within the academic community, as well as providing clinical resources and education to the community at large, our members strive to halt the spread of HIV through cutting-edge research, innovative clinical trials, compassionate care, and public education.The HIV Institute is proud to partner with our local and international communities to:-Help researchers share ideas and, together, devise new approaches to prevent, diagnose, and treat HIV/AIDS.-Help UC San Diego clinicians by providing support for HIV testing, clinic equipment and furniture, and outreach.-Help researchers, clinicians, and patients by supporting seminars and other educational programs.-Raise funds for items that federal grant funding cannot buy, including laboratory equipment.
