Civic & Social Organization - Cork, County Cork, Ireland
UCC Friends of MSF is a society set up with two core objectives:- To raise awareness of the international work of MSF, their ongoing campaigns and humanitarian issues.- To raise funds for MSF's work where the need for medical care is greatest. We believe every life matters. Every heartbeat has a history. Every individual has dignity.Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency life-saving assistance in more than 70 countries to people affected by armed conflicts, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters or social and healthcare exclusion.Approximately 3,000 people are currently overseas from their home country, working in MSF projects around the world. As well as medics (doctors, surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, midwives, laboratory technicians and mental health specialists) many other experienced, skilled professionals are needed. Logistics managers, water and sanitation experts, financial and HR coordinators all contribute to rapid and effective medical care. The locally employed staff form the backbone of every MSF project. Without these staff MSF could not function.MSF is an independent organisation, able to respond where and when the need is greatest, irrespective of politics, race or religion. MSF rely on the support of private individuals to fund its work and to ensure this independenceRegular financial support from individuals ensures that MSF can work in some of the world's most volatile locations, reaching remote and otherwise inaccessible areas to provide basic health care to people who otherwise have none. This support allows MSF to provide medical care to people on the basis of need alone.
