The Literary and Historical Society (L&H) is University College Dublin's oldest debating society, and is the official College Debating Union. Founded in 1855 by Father John Henry Newman, it is one of the most prestigious and well-known student societies in Ireland and boasts over 6000 members.Its activities are numerous and cater to the many groups that populate the student community in UCD. The weekly House Debates on Wednesday night see the best in Guest and Student speakers argue over the most pressing issues of our times. During the year the society presents the "James Joyce Award" to individuals who it feels have made a lasting contribution to society in any field. The society also runs social events, debate training workshops, school competitions. The society competes at most international debating competitions on the British Parliamentary Circuit, including the Oxford IV, Trinity IV and the World University Debate Championships. The society also has a record of success in both The Irish Times and Irish Mace debating competitions
