The debate team offers reasoned discourse on contemporary topics such as crime, the economy, foreign relationships, and immigration - the topic is selected at the start of each semester by a national committee.Debaters compete in teams of two against other students from colleges and universities around the country. UD is a member of the National Educational Debate Association (NEDA); competitions include both Policy and Public Forum debating, but focused on conversational, civil delivery before lay judges. The team also participates in a variety of individual events and parliamentary debate competitions. The team does not hold auditions, and prior debate experience is not required. Everyone who practices and is prepared for a tournament is eligible to compete. Tournaments are usually held on Fridays and Saturdays, and we typically attend three to four tournaments per semester. The team covers all expenses for competitions, including entry fees, transportation, meals, and lodging. Students who participate in Speech and Debate are eligible for a 1-credit Communication Practicum.
