Established in 2010, UMCASI is a non-profit engineering organization consistingof students in all stages of their degrees. One of the benefits students receiveby being UMCASI members is the opportunity to compete in the national CASIFree Flight Glider Competition, held each May in Gananoque, Ontario. In order tocompete, university teams are required to fully design, construct, and fly an original, unpowered aircraft (or glider) that must fit within a 2x2x1m box and weigh less than1.2kg. Once launched, the glider may not be actively controlled in any way during itsflight save for a team-designed dethermalizer device used to safely bring the gliderdown on command. The gliders are manually launched using a tow rope and eachflight is adjudicated based on a weighted combination of payload and flight time. This year, we continue to improve our high-performance glider design and innovatewith new materials, manufacturing methods, and state-of-the-art performanceanalysis. These include computational fluid dynamics software, advanced compositematerials, and laser cutter technology.Recent Accomplishments:2013 CASI Free Flight Competition:- First place finish overall- Top three highest scoring flights- Only team to fly in the first testing session- Best oral presentation2012 CASI Free Flight Competition:- Second place finish overall- Top two highest scoring flights- Best oral presentation- Most flights- Only glider to survive competition
