With a young, dynamic population, and bountiful renewable resources, we believe Africa's wildlands are filled with commercial potential that creates exciting opportunities for private sector participation. Through two decades of experience, we have seen first-hand that business can be a powerful force for slowing and reversing the degradation of nature; protecting not only valuable bio-diversity and ecosystem services but also removing an underlying cause of poverty and vulnerability.Umiliki Investments aims to unlock the economic potential of resources owned by rural Africans through responsible businesses that support healthy ecosystems. We support small and medium sized enterprises in sectors that use nature as a key business input—tourism, agriculture, livestock, renewable energy, and forestry- and operate within East Africa's threatened landscapes. We help businesses grow by enabling access to the latent commercial opportunities of underutilized land while supporting commercial partnerships that enable meaningful engagement of local stakeholders and link enterprise growth to environmental stewardship. Our investments seek to generate returns for investors, empower rural African communities to participate in the modern economy, and build resilient ecosystems. Umiliki is the result of a 13-year partnership between the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and Conservation Capital (CC). For nearly 60 years, AWF has been Africa's leading conservation organization. CC is a for-profit company with 20 years of experience developing investment opportunities within high priority conservation landscapes. Led by Giles Davies, the founder of Conservation Capital, Umiliki has deployed $7 million into a portfolio of nine investments representing tourism, livestock and agriculture industries.
