UniSolar is a community energy initiative that aims to bring solar panels to the roofs of UK universities. Community Energy places democratic control, active participation, and shared benefits at the centre of energy generation and demand reduction projects. Producing energy locally overcomes several issues: high energy prices from energy companies driven by profit; having no control over our energy supply; and the inefficiency of transporting electricity via a centralized grid. The profits from reselling unused energy are being reinvested in green community projects, building up skills in social entrepreneurship; and raising awareness of ways to mitigate climate change at a local level.
