Non-Profit - N/A, N/A, N/A
United Across Borders is a non-profit committed to helping impoverished individuals throughout the world by providing assistance that includes empowerment, education, clothing, and blankets. We are collecting clothing throughout the country, used and new, as well as blankets to give to the poorest of the poor in Bangladesh. These shirts and blankets will be distributed through the Rotary Club in Dhaka and Northern Bangladesh. As University of Kansas Law students we had the opportunity to travel to Bangladesh to work at a law firm and work on a publication about the safety regulation of the garment industry in Bangladesh. The garment industry in Bangladesh exports $24 billion of clothing to Europe and the United States. However, right outside the factory there are countless people that cannot afford to clothe themselves. There is a discrepancy when a country is able to produce clothing for such little money, and is worn by Americans and Europeans, and yet a young girl on the streets of Bangladesh has to beg for money to buy pants for her nine-month old son. This cruel irony sparked our idea to create United Across Borders. While we were in Bangladesh we gave away few Jayhawk shirts to kids without a shirt to wear. This simple act brought them so much joy, as it gave us such great joy to see these kids in our alma mater. This fueled our idea to collect college shirts back in the United States, and create a competition between the rival schools in our geographic area. We are hoping to help many of the people who toil day after day to create the clothes that we wear, and many of whom do not have the opportunities to earn a living. We are challenging colleges and educational institutions across the country to provide used and unwanted clothing to be donated. It is our hope that through the generosity of others that we will be able to clothe thousands of people.
