Scientific Research - N/A, N/A, UK
UFAW is an internationally-recognised, independent, scientific and educational animal welfare charity concerned with improving knowledge and understanding of animals' needs. A rapidly growing population which now exceeds 7 billion people inevitably places an increased demand for livestock produce (meat, fur, leather etc), for pharmaceuticals and also places growing pressures on wildlife populations and habitat. It is now widely accepted that many animals have the capacity to feel pain and distress and to experience suffering. Ensuring good welfare is about more than ensuring good health. Animal welfare is about the quality of animals' lives - their feelings. Knowledge of animals' needs is essential to make provisions for their welfare and to protect them from harms caused by human activities. Gaining this knowledge for animals, whether kept in our homes, on farms, or for research or in the wild, is a huge challenge. UFAW takes a scientific approach aimed at finding ways to gain insight into what matters to animals, it is the charity which promotes science in the service of animal welfare. UFAW's vision is to improve animals' lives through research, education, information and advice. It does this by: 1) promoting, funding and supporting animal welfare science and technology that underpins lasting advances in animal welfare 2) promoting and supporting education in animal care and welfare 3) sharing the knowledge unlocked by science by organising international symposia, meetings and workshops, publishing books, videos, articles, technical reports and the leading scientific journal Animal Welfare 4) providing expert advice to government departments and other bodies and by helping to draft and amend laws and guidelines Universities Federation for Animal Welfare - Registered Charity in England No 207996.
