أسست جامعة بنغازي في الخامس عشر من شهر ديسمبر سنة 1955م باسم الجامعة الليبية وكانت كلية الآداب والتربية النواة الأولى لهذه الجامعة العريقة والتي احتوت آنذاك(31) طالبا و (6) أعضاء هيئة تدريس وكان موقعها السابق داخل مدينة بنغازي. وفي عـام 1973 انتقلـت الجامعة إلى مقرها الحالي المدينة الجامعية في ضاحية قاريونس وفي عام 1976 تغيــر اسمها إلى جامعة قاريونس، تضــم الجامعة الان العديد من الكليات والمراكز الاستشارية والبحثيــة والخدمية وبلغــت مساحتها الإجمالية حوالي 530 هكتارا ويــدرس بالجامعة الآن أكثر من سبعين ألف طالبا وطالبة وبلغ عــدد أعضاء هيئة التدريس قرابة الالفين أما الموظفـون فعددهم يزيد عن الخمسة الاف موظف وموظفة، وبعد ثورة السابع عشر من فبراير وبناءً على قرار مجلس إدارة الجامعة استعادت الجامعة اسمها الأصيل "بنغازي" في انطلاقة جديدة نحو أفاق الرقي والتقدم.
