Completely unaided by the colonial British Government the University College of Science and Technology was founded on March 27, 1914, by the great visionary Sir Asutosh Mukherjee, the then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, using the generous donation from Sir Taraknath Palit and Sir Rashbehari Ghosh who together donated nearly thirty-seven and half lakhs of rupees and the premises, presently known as, "Rashbehari Siksha Prangan" at 92, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, Kolkata – 700 009 and "Taraknath Palit Siksha Prangan" at 35, Ballygunge Circular Road, Kolkata – 700 019. The establishment of the University College of Science and Technology signals the beginning of outstanding research in some branches of science and applied science, which put India on the map of World Recognition. A galaxy of Indian Scientists joined the departments set up with the income of endowments and began their work in Science with whatever apparatus locally available in India and soon made their mark in their chosen fields. The first batch of teachers included Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, Chandra Sekher Venkata Raman, Sisir Kumar Mitra, and the legendary 1915 M.Sc. batch comprising Satyendranath Bose, Meghnad Saha, Jnanchandra Ghosh, Jnanendranath Mukherjee, and others. The College served as the cradle of Indian Sciences by winning the Noble Prize in Physics by Sir Raman in 1930 and many fellowships of the Royal Society London. Internationally, the university departments are being ranked #601-800 by THE 2021 Engineering Ranking, and #451-500 by QS 2021 Subject Ranking for both Physics and Chemistry. University of Calcutta has been ranked 4th under "university" category and 11th under "overall" category by NIRF 2021. Presently the departments are spread across three campuses of the University - Rashbehari Siksha Prangan (Rajabazar Science College), Taraknath Palit Siksha Prangan (Ballygunge Science College), and Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy Shiksha Prangan (Technology Campus).
