The LCC offers programs and initiatives that draw on cultural heritage to address contemporary issues, connect social and environmental justice, and build partnerships across diverse student and communities for positive social change. Our mission is to engage the UIC campus and local communities to deepen understanding of the diverse cultural heritages and identities of Latinxs, issues affecting their lives, and creative solutions they are using to improve community life.The LCC gallery features the largest contemporary indoor mural in the City of Chicago called El Despertar de las Americas (The Awakening of the Americas) painted by muralist Hector Duarte in 1996 and restored in 2011 and 2016.The LCC was establishe in 1976 and is one of the seven Centers for Cultural Understanding and Social Change (CCUSC) at UIC. These centers provide intercultural engagement to increase understanding of diversity through collaborative efforts. The CCUSC report to the Office of Diversity in Academic Affairs.Our engaged learning includes the following:•Zona Abierta: highlights the intersection of the arts, humanities, science, and civic life.•Civic Cinema: screens documentary films facilitated by scholars and community experts.•Noche de Poetas: collaborates with diverse student organizations and community poets.•ARTivism: advances social and environmental justice through creative practices and actions.•Civic Dialogues and Tours: use the power of art and objects to connect UIC course material to community challenges and solutions.•Heritage Garden Internship: with the CCUSC, connects horticulture with social and environmental justice.•Reimagining Masculinities: with the CCUSC, unpacks issues of masculinity and gender.•L@S GANAS: the LCC lends its expertise to connect science and Latin American heritages to help UIC STEM students shape their identity as Latinx scientists.
