The Public History Program at UMass Amherst is dedicated to the idea that an understanding of the past is essential to a free and enlightened citizenry.Founded in 1986, the program today is one of the most highly-regarded in the nation. Our award-winning faculty work closely with the leadership of agencies and organizations at national, regional, state, and local levels-from the National Park Service to our neighboring historical commissions-to expand the ways insight about the past can make real change in the world.Our students and alumni are involved from the outset in field service projects with community partners, enabling student to build solid practical skills, test and expand their knowledge, learn to work in collaboration both within and beyond campus, and see what happens when theory meets practice. They leave UMass ready to enter a variety of communities of practice, with the skills, training, and experience necessary to work ethically and effectively with a wide range of audiences.
