Environmental Services - San Francisco, California, United States
The Urban Watershed Project was founded in 1996 as a environmental non-profit organization working on water quality and stream restoration at the Presidio of San Francisco. The organization worked with many agencies on the Presidio including the National Park Service, the Presidio Trust, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the Department of Toxic Substances Control, USEPA, San Francisco Unified School District, University of California Berkeley. The mission of the Urban Watershed Project was to restore the Tennessee Hollow watershed in the Presidio of San Francisco and to use that restoration process to educate youth and adults about the value of natural resource protection in an urban setting. In its 18 years of service UWP's dream was largely realized. UWP formed a partnership with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and created Project WISE (Watersheds Inspiring Student Education) in 2001. Tennessee Hollow is still undergoing restoration work and students still use the area as an outdoor environmental classroom through Project WISE and the Crissy Field Center. These areas were professional scientific research, restoration advocacy and education programs for high school and college students. The scientific research complemented the educational programs by providing students with direct hands-on experience with professional scientific principles and procedures. The research also informed the organization's advocacy for and participation in ecological restoration projects in the Presidio, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the greater San Francisco Bay Area.Related pages:https://www.presidio.gov/presidio-trust/planning/tennessee-hollow-watershed-restorationhttps://www.nature.nps.gov/water/planning/foundation_reports/Reports/goga_wrfr.pdfhttp://ntiaotiant2.ntia.doc.gov/top/docs/other/urban%20watershed%20project.pdfhttps://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2004AM/finalprogram/abstract_74654.htmhttp://www.shapingsf.org/public-talks/ecology.htmlhttps://books.google.com/books?id=yzs3AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA328&lpg=PA328&dq=urban+watershed+project+presidio+of+san+francisco&source=bl&ots=BDadhJ32Le&sig=IiOtWUgkzhcurIfNUlxN5vZShys&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjExP61zrDZAhUpyoMKHT9BARgQ6AEIQzAF#v=onepage&q=urban%20watershed%20project%20presidio%20of%20san%20francisco&f=falsehttps://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Project-aims-to-reclaim-Presidio-streams-2600242.php
