Public Safety - Utica, New York, United States
March 5th, 2018 at around 11:00 am, Utica College went into lock down due to a credible shooting threat. Threats like this have become more frequent in recent years and as expected many students and even faculty were confused on how to react and ultimately this caused a lot of trauma and distress within our college community. We were lucky for the threat not to become more than just a threat but as we've seen others haven't been as lucky. After the long day had finally ended and the community spent time to reflect upon the incident, one thing became clear. No one expects it to happen to them and while we do bury it in the back of our minds on how we would respond to these incidents, when it actually happens, emotions run wild. It was after this reflection that we realized you can never be too prepared. The college administration is working extremely hard to prepare and mend the necessary policies, shall this event ever happen again. The Utica College Emergency Management Organization, was established in order to supplement the efforts of the college administration and help provide awareness and preparedness training for any type of disaster, to the Utica College community. We will use course materials from FEMA, experienced instructors and guest speakers, training exercises and a variety of other reputable sources to ensure that if disaster strikes (man-made or natural) the Utica College community will certainly strike back. We will help instill vigilance and resilience in the hearts of the Utica College community from the inside.
