as a sequel to the seminar organized by the central drug research institute (cdri) lucknow in the year 1975 on the development of drug industry in uttar pradesh a committee consisting of officers of the pradeshiya industrial & investment corporation of u. P. Limited (picup) and c. D. R. I. Was constituted by the industries department to go into the question of identifying possible fields for the development of drug industry in u. P. On the basis of the recommendation of this committee and based on the recommendation of hathi committee which stipulates that a public sector shall play a leading role in manufacturing of bulk drugs & formulation and idea for setting of a pharmaceutical industry in the state in public sector for the manufacture of formulation was mooted. The main reason for proposing such a unit was that medicines worth rs. 10 crores (at that time) were purchased annually by the various state govt. Hospitals and at times medicines of good quality were not available at reasonable rateswith a view to make standard quality medicines at cheaper prices available for mass consumption a manufacturing unit for formulation such as tablets capsules syrups injectables etc was envisaged. .
