JDC West is the largest business competition in Western Canada and is a three day event that showcases academics, athletics, debate, and an out-of-the-box social competition. Nearly 650 students from 12 of Western Canada's top universities unite annually to compete in this competition. JDC West seeks to assemble the best business students that Western Canadian universities have to offer. The competition provides students with the opportunity to compete with each other in all facets of business, while developing valuable networking contacts, critical thinking, and leadership skills. Students compete in four categories: Academics: Academic competitors compete in the following disciplines: Accounting, Business Strategy, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resources Management, International Business, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Not for Profit Strategy and Taxation. Debate: The debate team is composed of four members debating in Canadian Parliamentary-style regarding issues pertaining to business and society. With points awarded for speech content, refutation, organization and delivery, the debate competition tests participants' ability to think critically under pressure and analyze all aspects of a business-related topic as it pertains to government, policy, society, and morality. Social: Social participants must be ready for anything at a moment's notice, as all challenges are kept secret until the competition itself, which can take place anytime and anywhere during JDC West. Judged on timeliness, costumes, participation, enthusiasm, and all-around awesomeness, social competitors are poised to become the faces of school spirit and pride, no less than legends in the making. Athletics: Designed to test the athlete's agility, aim and endurance, the Athletics competition showcases teamwork, sportsmanship, work ethic and athletic abilities, providing entertainment for players, participating schools and local audiences.
