In 1781, following a harrowing campaign through North Carolina, General Cornwallis brought his army to Yorktown, Virginia. Seeing the geographic advance, the Marquis de Lafayette wrote, "if the French Army could all of a sudden arrive in Virginia, and be supported by a squadron, we would do some very good things."
