The idea of Supermoto was born out of an concept to find the best overall racer from different motorcycling disciplines, and was initially designed as a made for TV event in America in the late 1970s called Superbiker. The popularity of Superbiker grew throughout the 1980s after it launched in France and Europe, where ‘Superbiker' became known as ‘Supermotard'.At the turn of the millennium, Supermotard racing commenced in Britain where it was re-translated from French, and subsequently throughout the world, became known as Supermoto.Supermoto is a hybrid of three popular styles of motorcycle racing, Road-racing, Motorcross and Flat Track. Racing on 70% tarmac and 30% dirt surfaces, the sport is specifically designed to challenge riders and entertain spectators both at the event and on TV. Top motorcyclists such as John McGuiness, David Knight and Stuart Easton have competed in British Supermoto events, an indication that Supermoto creates a unique challenge for all racers. This challenging appeal is no longer exclusive to motorcycle racing as now the British Superlite and Superquader Championship utilise the hybrid Supermoto course, extending each round of the championship to an exciting and diverse two-day race weekend.One of the few stadium or arena based motorcycle sports; British Supermoto remains true to its routes providing a unique spectator event whilst achieving a significant television audience.
