Viewpoint Community Media is a recently registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation, born out of the 42 year old Swindon Viewpoint initiative – Britain's original and longest-running Community TV service. Our vision is of vibrant and cohesive local communities, with the skills and access to create, express and communicate through media and participating widely as producers and consumers of media content. The direct benefits to such a community include an increased understanding of local issues, identity and diversity, increased pathways and audiences for creative expression, as well as a greater awareness of – and participation in – local community life.We have three strands to our work: media training, media distribution and media archiving. As far as we are aware, we hold the largest archive of community media production anywhere in the UK, with over 2,000 locally-produced and focused videos spanning a time-frame of over 100 years. This is all freely accessible for the public to view at www.swindonviewpoint.com.Community Media is media created and controlled by either a geographic community or a community of interest or identity. It has been described in a broad sense as "community communication" and prioritises social value over financial or other gain. It is distinct from commercial or state-run media and may include radio, television broadcasting, independent film-making, print, online platforms or hyperlocal media.
