VASC opened in April 1992, after a seven-year development process that involved interested citizens, City of Hampton officials, NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), Langley Air Force Base, and the Smithsonian Institution. The result was the development of a unique and architecturally impressive, award winning, wing-shaped, 110,000 square-foot museum which provides a focal point for informal science education activities and serves as the official visitor centers for NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base. The Center strives to offer the best possible visitor experience by providing a fresh and engaging museum environment. Exhibits and education programs focus on science experiences and applications. These include wide-ranging experiments conducted in space and on Earth, the "why and how" of these applications, and technology's effect on our lives.
