Hospital & Health Care - Boston, Massachusetts, United States
Even with a brain cancer diagnosis, Cory Brown's first reaction was, "How can I be a part of the solution here?" Following a meeting with a doctor who lacked any amount of empathy, we were blown away and broken by his words and lack of compassion. We identified our problem to attack after we understood this issue was widespread. We began deep diving into research-based data that focuses on the correlation between high empathy output from people in patient-facing roles and positive patient outcomes. We decided we would make a mission statement and take multiple shots on our goal of being part of the solution. Our mission: Increasing the amount of empathy output from individuals who are in patient-facing roles. We're doing this through (1) our podcast, which captures the ecosystem of voices in the patient experience (2) our iOS application, which will focus on patient/caregiver mental health resources; this will help build your Empathy Team who can be pinged on a moment's notice if you need help and are not sure on how to ask. The app will also focus on providing various resources and templates for families going through the beginning, middle, and end of battles, taking as many things as possible off the family's plate. (3) Lastly, we're working to build a better certification/learning track for people in patient-facing roles to help make them their best selves. We will house all of this under a non-profit, Voices of Empathy
