Welcome to the Waitaki, a land of geological and cultural marvels steeped in ancient history. Located in the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark is a 7,200 km2 part of Zealandia - the world's ‘8th continent'. A Geopark is a new UNESCO designation that gives world-wide status to a defined area of international geological significance. A charitable Trust governs the development of the Waitaki Whitestone aspiring Global Geopark, where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed within a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. It is a platform for addressing the societal challenges we all face - such as using the Earth's resources sustainably, mitigating the effects of climate change and reducing natural disaster-related risks. A key benefit of the Geopark will be the creation of international profile for the District and New Zealand, innovative local enterprises, new jobs and visitor revenue. Our goals1. Enhance Waitaki's social identity and increase community pride by providing a unifying platform to share the stories of our land, rich culture and heritage.2. Inspire locals and visitors to learn, discover and connect with the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark through educational programmes and by providing engaging experiences and activities, with a focus on youth.3. Ensure key geological, cultural, heritage sites and assets are visibly part of the Geopark, well curated, accessible and protected.4. Increase community well-being through holistic sustainable development supporting economic growth.
