Wampum was created to make it easier for consumers to get rid of unwanted items that had the potential to be "upcycled" and reused. It started as a search engine, scraping the web for relevant organizations that could accept these items and then aggregating the results into ElasticSearch. Over time, the project grew to include offerings of free shipping labels in order to encourage users to take the next step of submitting their items to the locations they found on the site. The third and final iteration saw research into a reusable shipping container that could take the place of disposable packaging. This resulted in the renaming of the project from Wampum to OysterPail, given the box's similarity in design to Chinese take out containers of the same name.
