WCOS is founded in 2011 and is the second university-based Chinese Orchestra Society in the UK after Cambridge University's Chinese Orchestra Society (CUCOS). We are a student-run society driven by a determined team of student musicians passionate about promoting traditional Chinese music to the wider student community through group and solo orchestral performances. By fusing the rich ancient history intrinsic in traditional Chinese music with the contemporary vibe of western music, we can express this fascinating combination of cultures in a way that brings opposite sides of the globe together through a language that everyone can understand - the language of music. With this, we hope to bring together people of all abilities and backgrounds to come and appreciate what is a music form of great antiquity yet is still extraordinarily relevant in today's society.Our welcoming and flexible structure allow beginners and experienced players alike to come together as one cohesive group of performers all with a desire to express their passion for music. We aim to put on a flagship Annual Concert consisting of a medley of the most beautiful pieces of music performed by some of the most talented student musicians around. But we are also committed to give back to the student community by conducting open lessons to give those with little or no experience or those with a hint of curiosity an opportunity to discover the enchanting world of Chinese music.
