Nonprofit Organization Management - Edwardsville, Illinois, United States
The mission of the Watershed Nature Center, is to promote stewardship and sustainability via equitable access to nature, environmental education, and ecological restoration. The Center is a unique partnership between the City of Edwardsville, IL and the Nature Preserve Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 1991 by local community members who worked to transform an abandoned sewage lagoon into an open-to-the-public nature reserve. Located in the Metro East region of the greater St. Louis area, the Watershed Nature Center is a vital part of the Cahokia Creek watershed, helping to soak up storm water, reduce nutrient run-off, and provide critical habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. Regarded today as the "outdoor gem" of the City of Edwardsville's park system, the 45+ acre site and its programming are managed by the Foundation and its team of staff, interns, and volunteers, with the generous support of community partners. Today, the Center's mission remains focused on its three pillar priorities: Education. Restoration. Recreation. Its goals: 1.) Reconnect people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to nature. 2.) Protect and restore ecologically functional lands and waters. 3.) Promote active, healthy, sustainable, and restorative communities and livelihoods.
