WAY Initiative Details
The WAY initiative was inaugurated by Mahmoud Elsharawy to provide a third option for those who received inadequate education and cannot afford incredibly expensive English classes. The initiative aims to pass down - in a ten-hour crash course- the experience of self-acquisition of the language via visual materials like movies, TV shows, public speeches, etc. to emerging generation who relentlessly crave for knowledge. Accordingly, the initiative is poised to completely change the perceived ideas of English for them as well as provide them with the appropriate resources to bolster the joy of their learning process. In order to do this exquisitely, we have equipped ourselves with advanced presentation software like Prezi, stand-up comedy skills which we developed recently along with the ability to imitate actors, especially their voices. we are trying to give them a respite from our archaic, outdated educational system. However, our goals go beyond that to include taking our fellow Egyptians out of their comfort zone and shedding some light on the different cultures and constructive concepts that can be adopted from these cultures. Getting exposure to different cultures make them more willing to espouse more liberal views and advocate for liberty, freedom, social and gender equity, equal opportunities, diversity and acceptance of the other. The language here becomes a means to a greater end.Our work is dedicated to remote areas and mainly targeting university students. Thus far, WAY has been to Aswan which is 1000 km south of Cairo, Luxor (750 km south of Cairo), Bani Sueif 150 km away from Cairo, and three universities in Greater Cairo. Since its launch, hundreds of both high school and university students got benefited from the initiative, proudly, more than a half of them were females and this is just a harbinger of its impact.
