Some of the most computationally expensive and cutting-edge functionalities in modern software have not been able to operate in the browser space and have been limited to native, low-level code. However, with the advent of WebAssembly, this barrier has been removed. The WebAssembly MVP, released Feb. 28, 2017, gave us the ability to port OpenCV, a time-tested computer vision library written in C++, to the browser. Using WebAssembly, we were able to take advantage of the object detection functionalities that made OpenCV so popular — functionalities that historically have performed poorly when powered solely by JavaScript.
