WEEDO - Women Empowering and Entrepreneurship Development Organization - is a nonprofit organization in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam and was founded in 2019 by Rehema Konza, a Tanzanian social entrepreneur. Our mission is to transform and empower the community in a sustainable way and to enable individuals to become independent through education. In addition, we focus on the conservation of natural resources.OUR CHALLENGE - GENDER INEQUALITYWhile Tanzania has experienced growth in girls' enrolment in primary education over the last few years, there is still much to be done to allow girls to complete their education and to become confident and independent women.Due to cultural traditions and roles, boys are more likely to receive an education than girls. In addition, many girls and young women drop out of school when they reach adolescence due to early marriage or pregnancy. This prevents them from joining the workforce and benefiting from economic development initiatives led by the government or NGOs.In many areas of Tanzania, women still lack the basic freedom that men have. We have observed firsthand through our work with communities in rural Tanzania that women are often treated as property, married at a very early age (as young as 12), beaten by their husbands (sometimes even to death), and treated as a source of income, being sold to older men when the household is experiencing hunger. The experience of violence and sexual abuse, being held as a domestic worker, being one of multiple wives and not being able to participate in household decisions leads to hopelessness. We feel this situation is the deeply unjust. But we also believe that there are ways to prevent these situations and to empower women. WHAT WE DO By educating women, in particular about issues such as sexual violence, self-confidence and family planning, and by offering training in business skills and exposure to entrepreneurial activities, we help them to build their self-confidence.
