The West Midlands Central Accident Resuscitation & Emergency (CARE) team is a group of approx 60 volunteer Doctors and Nurses who provide a medical team in support of the West Midlands Ambulance Service. Each team consists of a Doctor, Nurse, WMAS Incident Officer and a Trainee. The Doctors and Nurses typically work in the local area, although some members do travel from all over the UK. The team approach is unusual for a professional volunteer organisation, at present the team operates eight hour shifts on Friday & Saturday Nights and Sunday afternoons with additional support available if requested by WMAS. The team is able to offer advanced surgical intervention, anaesthetics, airway and equipment support such as novel haemostatics and the EZIO device. The CARE Team Was formed in 1990 by the current President, Professor Sir Keith Porter. The scheme is affiliated with the British Association for Immediate Care (BASICS). The Scheme is funded entirely by Charitable donations and is a registered charity number 1129027.
