Our History: Answering a NeedWhitmarsh House traces its beginnings to a residence of the Brothers of Our Lady of Providence on Whitmarsh Street in Providence. A Family Court Judge was desperate for a placement for a few boys who had to be removed from a chaotic family home. He asked the Brothers for help and they said yes. By 1975, Whitmarsh House became incorporated as a nonprofit agency serving the needs of "at-risk" youth. We currently serve approximately 35 boys and young men ages 12 to 20 as well as adults with developmental disabilities. Our Vision: We will help every youth and adult entrusted to our care find acceptance, embrace new opportunities and lead dignified, productive and rewarding lives. Our Mission: Through our residential and community based programs and services, Whitmarsh House provides developmentally and behaviorally challenged individuals and their families with the guidance, resources and advocacy necessary to achieve their goals.Admissions and Intake: In addition to private placements, Whitmarsh House contracts with and accepts placements through the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF). These Residential Services are available for adolescents up to age 21 who are under the custody of DCYF.Whitmarsh House also accepts referrals through the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (BHDDH) for adults who have developmental challenges.
