A student-run noncommercial educational FM station in Orono, Maine, licensed to the University of Maine, WMEB-FM was first permitted to broadcast via antenna by the Federal Communications Commission (FFC) on Nov. 9, 1962. Its transmission tower, now located in Old Town not far from UMaine's J. Franklin Witter Teaching & Research Center, was initally above Stevens Hall within which the studios were located. One of the station's first major events was collaborating with UMaine student-run newspaper The Maine Campus to report local area election night coverage on Nov. 13, 1962, providing listeners with results some two hours before other media.
