Economic Empowerment Officer at Women for Women Rwanda
We are a small, UK-based charity with the aim to raise awareness about universal attitudes about rape, and, more specifically, to empower female victims of genocidal rape in Rwanda.MissionThe mission of Women for Rwanda is to give a voice to those women in Rwanda who fell victims of systematic genocidal rape in 1994 and prevent this from happening to future generations. Women for Rwanda aims to provide these women with the recognition they deserve, for the purpose of healing. Moreover, it aims to educate the international community about women's rights for a more equal future. Finally, we aim to empower a group of women with permanent work and achieve sustainable development in the region. Women for Rwanda works through fundraising and partnerships to return these women the life that was taken away from them.DescriptionIn 1994, Rwanda witnessed a genocide in which the Hutu majority killed 800,000 people of the Tutsi ethnic group. During the genocide, thousands of Tutsi women were raped, and forced to witness the killings of their relatives and the destruction of their homes. These events tremendously traumatised Rwandan women and marginalised the 500,000 rape victims from society. Today, 18 years later, the women still lack a voice, and most of them have been unable to heal or reintegrate back to society.
