Public Policy - Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
WorkingRite is a charity tackling youth unemployment. Our head office is in Edinburgh, but we have projects across Scotland and in parts of England. We are recognised leaders in the field of work-based learning and mentoring for 16–18 year-old young people who are not in education, employment or training. We have pioneered a programme that matches youngsters to small, local businesses for up to six months in full-time work experience and on-the-job training. Our method works by using a young person's ‘first job', as not only an introduction into the world of work, but also a rite of passage into the world of adulthood using the inspirational effect of an adult mentor in the workplace. It fills a gap in the set of opportunities currently available to 16 year-old school leavers with low qualifications as it provides a supported learning and development opportunity that is overwhelmingly workplace-based rather than classroom-focused. Over 80% of trainees who complete a WorkingRite placement progress to positive destinations such as further education, employment or apprenticeships.
