Civic & Social Organization - London, England, United Kingdom
The WR project has contributed to a global conversation about gender, sexuality, and mental health. We will now build on this legacy through a global sports-based project to promote self-esteem, empathy, and social responsibility during a challenging time. Working with major sporting bodies and supported by an 18-month research study by Leeds Beckett University and the University of Calgary, Worldwide Roar will be an academically guided experiment in social activism, personal development and mass participation art based in sport. The project will offer an experiential journey for university and amateur sportsmen through a course of facilitated peer education, mentoring and a creative approach to staging sport, followed by ongoing individual and group support. Our project was built on creating and promoting disruptive perspectives on the male body. We will continue this tradition. Echoing the late 19th century revival of the ancient Greek games, Worldwide Roar will put sport at the heart of a range of contemporary social and mental health issues by revisiting an aspect of the original games omitted from the modern Olympiad: male nudity. The course will provide an opportunity for sportsmen to become agents for change through exploring their relationship with their bodies, masculinity, vulnerability, and power. Our experience shows that a combination of individual and team-based nudity liberates men to become more conscious of their gender and sexuality, along with the key role these play in their life chances, life experience and social impact. WR will revolve around safeguarded, curated sporting events developed in collaboration with participants. Like academics and art practitioners, WR will focus on documentation. Content captured in the documentation process will speak for itself, through film, photography, and the voices of the participants.
